The old warrior and the new

Little Joe  is getting old (18) and he has outlived his mares. Now he is trying desperatley to get more mares and is failing. He has been trying for two years now to no avail. As you can see by the photo, he is getting pretty beat up and is growing thin.He has a gash over his left eye and there is blood on him, not sure if it is his or another horse's.  I really don't expect for him to live through the winter. When an older stallion loses his mares it is difficult for him to get more and when he is a bachelor like this, he will usually die within a few years.
The other horse in the photo is Rojito. He was orphaned when he was about 6 months or so old.  His mother died during the winter. Now he is a 2 year old young bachelor.  Little Joe is his sire and Rojito occasionally hangs out with him, but is usually alone. Hopefully, at least one of the other 2 year old colts will leave their band and form a bachelor band with Rojito. Horses are social animals and need to have a bond of some sort with another horse.
So, this may be the last father/son photo of these two. Little Joe has had a good life as far as wild horses go, but it was sad to see him outlive his mares and not be able to pick up anymore. But he has certainly tried very hard! Now it is time for Rojito to carry on for him.

    This and That

Didn't go to the range at all last week, tire issues! Went the week before and didn't see a whole lot.  The gnats have been fierce and the heat ..... Well, suffice it to say that the horses seek the trees pretty early right now. I did have a brief encounter with Sid's band, long enough to get a few shots (far away shots!) and to determine that their foal is a filly! At the last meeting we voted on Ember for her name. That goes with Ashes (her mother) and Cinders ( her grandmother). Spent a few moments with Flame's band. I was actually able to sneak up on them, that is tough to do with Ragtail around. Ragtail's Mare looks like she should foal any day now. She is getting really big! Black Bart wasn't with them the first time I saw them and I thought he had probably joined the bachelors finally. However, later in the day I saw Black Bart on Cosgrove Ridge by himself, whinnying and racing around. A few minutes later he found Flame's band and rejoined them. Big baby! I am sure that soon he will be out on his own.

Got to spend a little time with Boone's band. They were on Boulder  Ridge and just hanging out. Comet is growing and is going to be a beauty when she gets older. They seem to be spending a lot of their time in that area. At least I know where to look for them! The rest of the bands shift around quite a bit.

Well, that is about it for now. We should be having a couple more foals soon. I do know that Tall Girl, Sunkist and Enigma all have foals, but I don't have photos of them yet.  Tall Girl had a paint filly and was named Phantom Mist and Sunkist had a sorrel appy, gender unknown at this point, will name later. Enigma also had a paint but we don't know the gender on that one either, so will name later.
